In a cruel and corrupt world, two poor young sisters are visited by a book salesman with a dark secret in his briefcase. But the girls see through the Victorian machinery of their would-be saviour and devise a macabre revenge that may just solve their money problems forever.
RAMONA, a world weary girl of thirteen, kneels in the sitting room of her terraced hovel, slowly counting her coppers. Her every move is traced by her spooky big-eyed little sister, TANYA, who is swaying in the rocking chair in the corner. There is a knock, and Ramona opens the front door to an eerie figure.
She lets in THE SALESMAN, handsome of face and fixed of smile. In the sitting room, The Salesman opens his case and places a pile of ornately decorated encyclopaedias on the table. He hands one to Ramona and one to Tanya, and soon they are both mesmerised. The two sisters distracted, The Salesman releases a catch on the bottom book. A hatch opens and, unseen, dozens of spiders troop out.
In the narrow hallway, Ramona does not hear the quiet thud as she lets The Salesman out. She closes the door, not noticing the pile of business cards on the floor until The Salesman and the memory of him are long gone.
That evening, by the light of the dying fire, the spiders come out to work. But they are not the only predators in Ramona and Tanya's midst...
